A photographic love-letter to a suburb in transition.
Created over 18 months, these photographs were captured in a converted shopfront studio located in the inner-city Sydney suburb of Redfern - where local residents were invited to have their portrait taken. The camera was placed inside a bespoke light-proof box, behind a one-way mirror. So as the participants looked into the lens, all they saw was their own reflection. This method created a distant, dreamlike stare in the gaze of each person. It also gave a level of empowerment, as each person saw themselves as the camera saw them.
All profits form this exhibition were donated to the Kinchela Boys Home Aboriginal Corporation. KBHAC is a not-for-profit Aboriginal controlled organisation established to help restore and reconstruct the identity, dignity and integrity of the individuals, their families and descendants of Aboriginal men who were forcibly removed from their families and put into the Kinchela Boys Home and to address the intergenerational trauma that adversely impacts on their lives.
